BIOGRAPHY

Personal Profile

Stewart Harper is a Chartered Company Secretary, with a background in compliance and regulation.  He has worked a lot within the education and public sectors and with businesses in the private sector.  Stewart believes that a good business is one that uses the requirements of the law and the expectations of stakeholders in a pro-active way to improve, develop and ultimately thrive – rather than a list to tick off.  Indeed, so many businesses can be stronger by embracing the requirements of the law and building upon them.

Stewart has a number of non-executive appointments in the education sector, and with charities, as well as providing consultancy to different clients.

Outside of work, Stewart likes to watch sport, most especially football and cricket.  Whilst following West Ham United has rarely given unalloyed pleasure, following Yorkshire and watching England in recent years has given a little more to cheer.

COMPANY PROFILE

Cardno Management Services provides businesses with support to go beyond simple compliance, but to use the best practices of good governance to enhance their business for the future.  Governance is about having ‘checks and balances’ but that means different things to different businesses, depending on their size, complexity or sector.  Having governance structures should not mean unnecessary bureaucracy or red tape, but it should mean that the business has different opportunities to manage risk and develop opportunities.  Cardno Management Services will help you identify those, and working together find the best possible solutions.

Cardno Management Services will work with you, from one-off tasks such as writing a Shareholders’ Agreement to set the terms of a new relationship, the incorporation of a new company, or the amendment of Articles of Association, through project-based work such as undertaking a review of governance arrangements for your organisation and suggesting new approaches, to longer-term relationships such as the provision of Company Secretary services on an ongoing basis.  We also work with businesses in reviewing risk management frameworks, or their arrangements for internal controls such as to prevent fraud.

For single owner-operating businesses, it is sometimes difficult to remember what ‘hat’ you are wearing, but it is important to run your business as a separate entity.  We can help you put things in place to achieve that.

Our approach is not to present a single solution, but to use the best practices and the culture of the company to suggest ways to grow.

HEY Stewart, WHY DID YOU JOIN
THE NORTHERN AFFINITY?

I joined The Northern Affinity in 2020 because I was looking for more than a networking organisation. Working on your own can be a lonely experience, at times, but what I have found in The Northern Affinity is a group of like-minded people who are passionate about what they do, but equally passionate about helping each other to thrive. In a challenging year, finding The Northern Affinity was a major highlight, and I am so glad I joined.
